Sterlite’s approach toward sustainability is embedded in its philosophy of conducting business in a responsible manner, with integrity and respect for the interests of all those impacted by our operations and activities. As a value driven company, we want to generate economic well being; create opportunities for enhancing quality of life; respect the environment; and be a positive influence in the community where we exist. Our commitment to sustainability is amply reflected in our Vision, “To be the world’s ‘best in class’ copper producer and build a progressive organization that all stakeholders are proud to be associated with”. We have devised a focused strategy for realising our vision. The strategy has been developed as an output of a rigorous process involving top and senior management, with objectives such as; achieve full customer satisfaction, ensure congenial atmosphere to foster growth for our employees, provide safe work place, become a catalyst of development and transformation of local communities, maintain best practices for conservation of environment, strengthen relationship with our business partners such as suppliers & contractors, and adhere to highest standards of corporate governance.

The strategy been so far and bear some fruits in past, which underscores our sustainability performance, and also act as a source of inspiration for us to move forward. Some of indicators highlighting our sustainability performance are given as;

 
Economic Performance
Revenues for SIIL rose by 7% to Rs. 12,673 crores in 2007-08
Reduced Unit conversion cost from 7.03 cents/lb in 2006-07 to 1.76 cents/lb in 2007-08
Increase in Profit after Tax (PAT) due to higher operational efficiencies and reduction in the cost of production.
Increase in sale of by products such as gypsum also added to revenue margins
Declared a total dividend of Rs 283 crores in the year 2007-08
 
 
Environmental Performance
 
Reduction in SO2 and fluorine emissions from 0.87 to 0.63 kg/T of sulfuric acid and 11.57 to 7.76 MT respectively.
Zero discharge is maintained from the inception of plant.
Installation of utility R.O. Plant leading to save 300 m3/day raw water.
Extensive use of innovative tools like 5S, TPM and TQM for improving the overall plant performance.
Three CDM projects in pipeline for getting registered with CDM-Executive board.
Reduction in specific water consumption from 8.54 to 8.32 m3/MT of copper cathode produced.
Increased training on HSE related matter from 6.45 to 11.31 manhour/per employee/per year for employees and 6.13 to 8.31 man-hour/per employee/per year for contract labors in comparison to last year.
Subscribed to Global Compact Principal and developing strategies to implement the principal.
Carrying out several technical studies with reputed institutions such CRRI, NCCBM and NML on effective disposal of copper slag for other industrial applications.
 
 
Social Performance
 
Increase in training man-day per employee/year from 5.2 to 6.34.
Increase in number of female employees from 45 to 129.
Encouraging Women Empowerment through 730 SHGs involving more than 10,000 women.
Promoting education in nearby villages – ~125000 students have benefited.
Construction of Pediatric Block in Govt. Hospital at Tuticorin.
Sponsoring 50 heart surgeries for the children from under privilege back ground.
Swajaldhara Drinking Water Project (to benefit 20,000 rural populace living in 43 villages).
Tuticorin Vision 2025 - developing vision document for the city, to focus Tuticorin as a attractive investment destination.
Sterlite in coordination with Tuticorin Port trust conducting General Health Camp for the coastal communities. Nearly 450 people benefited every month.
Jointly ventured the Adult Literacy education with the Govt of Tamilnadu’s ‘Arivoli Iyakam’. The aim is to achieve 100% literacy in 12 villages by 2010.
